Well the TRC 2002 Competition was a great success again this year. The weather was typical Garner
fashion raining most of the time. Temperatures were moderate making it more comfortable for the patients. While setting up for the competition on
the Advanced site, one of the judges (Penny), encountered a swam of angry bees on the cliff face. Several of the site judges proceeded down to the
face trail along with several members of the San Angelo REACT team. Austin Fire Department evacuated the patient down to the base of the mountain.
Despite being stung approx. 80 to 100 times, she was back in camp later that night and was on the mountain early
the next morning to help judge the Advanced site.
Thanks again to the Garner State Park Staff and the Texas Department of Wildlife, who without their invaluable assistance and cooperation, this years
competition would not have been possible. We can only hope that the park will be in it's usual pristine condition that the Garner Park Staff always seems to
manage to keep it in. Garner suffered considerable damage in "Old Garner" due to floods earlier in the year.

The second weekend in October is
when the best Search & Rescue teams in the area gather at Garner State
Park. Garner State Park is located outside of Uvalde Texas. This year (2003) the
second weekend of October (Oct.10-12) should be a very active weekend for
the park.
The competition is divided into
three categories: Basic, Advanced and Vertical. Basic sites are usually
a steep slope too steep to walk up without assistance. Advanced sites are
usually a very steep slope with some vertical portions. Vertical sites
are a mountain face or cavern. Teams are judged on technical rescue aspects
as well as the medical aspect. Teams of all medical levels compete on an
equal basis.
Moulage teams take care of making the "patient" look as real as a patient should look. This often means several trips up and
down the mountain to replace "injured" parts that have fallen off.

Veteran teams and "New" teams
are invited to send comments and questions to the links listed below. If
you would like to submit past competition photos for display on this page,
please send them as a .JPG attachment to Darrell. Hope to see everyone
there. Until then, work safe and be safe. Sincerely,
This competition could not occur
if it were not for the support staff.
The
Command Post / Sign In is staffed by some of the most patient people in the world. They take care of waivers, tickets,
ribbons, pins, fees, and just about anything else that may come up.
The
San Angelo REACT staff provides a majority of the communications. They also provide a vital link between the judges and the Command Post.
The
judges are experienced medical personnel as well as a vast working knowledge
of rescue rope systems.
Garner State Park has primitive
camping areas, trailer areas, screened shelters, and cabins for accommodations.
This is usually a busy weekend so make your reservations with the Park
early.
Most of the teams that compete
are veterans of the Garner competition. But new teams have a very good
chance of upsetting some of the veteran teams and taking home a trophy.
The 2000 competition was the beginning
of a new era. This web site is an example of the changes to come.
and check it often as
this page will be undergoing a major update in the near future.
